Who Can Apply: In 1996, Altrusa International of Gainesville recognized the need to establish a special scholarship program for women over the age of 25 who seek to change direction, pursue new career opportunities, or need to re-enter the job market after raising a family.
Altrusa has a long history of support, encouragement and leadership in community services and educational and vocational training opportunities for women. Scholarship assistance to women was first initiated in 1962 under the leadership of Altrusa President Ann Bromley.
Altrusa is a pioneer organization. It began as the first club of its kind for business women and became the first women’s classified service club. I was organized on April 11, 1917 in Nashville, Tennessee in the office of Mary Selley, the manager of the women’s department of the First National Bank. Altrusa is a national association for women similar to Rotary and holds as its philosophy, service above self and personal achievement.
