Who Can Apply: In March 2002, Altrusa International of Starke recognized the need to establish a special scholarship program for women over the age of 25 who seek to change direction, pursue new career opportunities or re-enter the job market after raising a family.
Altrusans have an obligation to help eliminate the career barriers women and girls face. In an effort to fulfill this obligation, the Starke Club has established this scholarship for Bradford County women. The goal of this scholarship is to help women improve the quality of their life for both the community as a whole and on an individual basis.
Altrusa is a pioneer organization. It began as the first club of its kind for business women and became the first women’s classified service club. I was organized on April 11, 1917 in Nashville, Tennessee in the office of Mary Selley, the manager of the women’s department of the First National Bank. Altrusa is a national association for women similar to Rotary and holds as its philosophy, service above self and personal achievement.
