Jeffery P Meyer Memorial Scholarship (Deadline: March 1, 2018)
Who Can Apply: “What an inspiration!” That’s the phrase most often used to describe Jeffrey Meyer for his courage, optimism, and perseverance. Jeff’s priority was always what he could do for others. At the age of 32, a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) – an atypical, but highly volatile manifestation of NF1, a disease he had since birth – was discovered in his hip. He endured extreme pain, many surgeries and chemotherapy trials.
But up to the day he died, Jeff pushed his suffering aside and reached out in any way he could to help those less fortunate than him. While he lost his personal battle with this disease, he touched many people positively and tried to make their life richer and more fulfilling. In his keynote address at Johns Hopkins Survivors Symposium in 2010, he advised, “Survivorship is as much about the journey as it is the finish line. And how you proceed on that journey will affect everything in the present, and the future.
So stay positive, stay realistic, and have the courage to take control of your life. It will make all the difference in the world.” The Jeffrey P. Meyer Memorial Scholarship is available to a young adult who has cancer or is a cancer survivor and demonstrates these ideals.
