Who Can Apply: Family and friends of Ms. Joyce Riherd made a significant contribution to establish a Public Health Nursing Scholarship in her honor for students from Bradford County who desire to attend Santa Fe College and pursue a nursing career.
Ms. Joyce Doke Riherd graduated nursing school in 1944 in Orlando, FL. She married in 1945, Mr. Robert Riherd. They moved to Lake Butler, FL and in 1947 Joyce first entered “Public Health”, working in Bradford and Union Counties. Later they moved to High Springs, FL where she became a housewife and helped manage the small farm. After the death of her husband in 1962, she and her two sons moved back to Bradford County where she worked for Bradford County Health Department. Through the years she worked her way up in management, but her greatest joy was serving in the communities of Bradford County. She made home visits, worked as the school nurse, and worked the office clinics. She also worked at maternity, pediatric, and immunization clinics.
For 30 years she served as a full-time nurse for the Bradford County Public Health Department; 8 years as director. But, typical, of Joyce, she went well beyond the call of duty to care for the needs of the county’s less fortunate citizens. On many occasions she spend her own money for those who could not afford to buy their prescriptions. She often carried clothing, blankets, and shoes in the trunk of her car to share with those in need. She was involved with many organizations such as Food Pantry of Bradford County. Joyce enjoyed working in the community, volunteering as a docent for the Eugene L. “Gene” Matthews Historical Museum and was on the Hospital Auxiliary at Shands of Starke. She was active in the Cancer Society and Head Start. Her community service was recognized in 1970 when she won the Chamber of Commerce Community Humanitarian Award.
Joyce was very proud to be a part of this community and to have her name associated with this Nursing Scholarship Program. She hoped that this program will help many people realize their dream of becoming a nurse and serving their community.
