Who Can Apply: In order to be eligible to participate in the contest, applicants must be a current or prospective college student. This includes rising sophomores, juniors or seniors who are enrolled at a four-year institution of higher learning, or a high school senior who has committed to attend an accredited U.S. college or university in the fall.
Submission: Applicants must submit a 500-word essay responding to the following question:
“How do the mainstream and social media impact the trajectory of life cycle of a given news story? For example, were the riots following Freddie Gray’s death in the custody of Baltimore police shaped by the fact that they were broadcast live across the country? What is the media’s responsibility in a situation such as that? How does the addition of amateur video from average citizens play into the equation?”
