Who Can Apply: Commencing in 2016, two $1000 scholarships will be awarded annually, to be used towards ISA New Zealand Semester programs in memory of Allison Willen. Students who believe they Live Like Ally and also share similar interests such as a passion for volunteering, a love for nature and hiking, and zest for life are encouraged to apply.
The “Live Like Ally” Memorial Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Allison Willen, a Junior at Eckerd College majoring in Human Development. Ally’s life ended tragically during a hiking trip in the beautiful Mt Aspiring National Park while a participant on a ISA semester study abroad program at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand.
Ally had a contagious love for life, nature, community service, and adventure. Ally was a passionate volunteer in her community, always doing what she could to make the world a better place. Ally felt that it was not enough to just make her way through life; instead, she sought to live with intentionality and to pour purpose into every moment. To that end, she adopted her life motto from Nobel Prize Winner Elie Wiesel’s mantra, “Think higher, feel deeper.” The phrase “Live Like Ally” has come to embody this idea of feeling and experiencing life to its greatest extent, as Ally sought to with a conviction that inspired anyone who came into contact with her. By living the way she did, others naturally gravitated towards her kind heart, enthusiasm for learning, and the way she embraced life each day.
