Vidgo TV Scholarship Essay (Deadline: November 30, 2016)
Who Can Apply: Both current students and incoming freshmen are eligible.
How to Apply: Live video broadcasting first occurred in 1928, on September 11. The screens were small and had such poor resolution that the broadcasted drama only showed the actors’ faces and hands, alternating between dialogue and holding props. In 1962, live TV went into low-earth orbit: the first live programming streamed over satellite happened that year on July 12. The first live video transmission over the internet is not clearly known, but likely occurred either in late 1994 or early 1995.
Now, streaming TV over the Internet on any device is replacing the old model.
- In 600 to 1,000 words, explain how your social group has been impacted by this change in TV service by interviewing at least five other people in your life for this essay. Your essay (600-1000 words) must include:
- Market Growth: 1) How many are now using a streaming TV service? Discuss when they switched and why; 2) What do you believe is their main need that is met by streaming TV?; 3) Why do you think some people haven’t switched?
- Subscription Models: 1) How many pay for that streaming TV service themselves?; 2) What’s their average bill?; 3) How many other subscription media services do they pay for?
- Your Conclusion: 1) What do you believe is the biggest advantage of subscribing to streaming TV?; 2) What do you believe is the biggest weakness that streaming TV services need to overcome?
