Who Can Apply:
- The 2022-2023 MassMutual Close the Gap Scholarship Program for undergraduates is a need based scholarship open to African American/Black classified as a junior, at the time of application, attending a public or private Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
- To apply you must be a junior, enrolled full-time at an accredited U.S. located HBCU during the 2022-2023 academic year. Applicants must have minimum 2.8 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
- All applicants must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have a demonstrated unmet financial need as verified by their college or university.
- Selected students will receive a need-based award up to $5,000 for the 2022-2023 academic year.
- Preference will be given to students majoring in math, statistics, economics, finance, computer science, data science and technologies, physics, any business major, supply chain management, or actuarial science.
- Preference shall be given to permanent residents of Massachusetts and the New England area, specifically Maine, Vermont New Hampshire, Connecticut, or Rhode Island.
- Applicants cannot be an employee, officer, consultant/service provider to or board member of MassMutual or UNCF or a member of the Reading Committee or a family member of any such individual.
Submission:
- Possess a minimum 2.8 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
- Complete a FAFSA form
- Submit an online application
- A one-page personal statement on career interests and goals.
- A recent academic transcript.
- A letter of recommendation is OPTIONAL.
- If providing a letter of recommendation, the recommender cannot be a family member.
- The individual recommender chosen by the student should be an educator, academic advisor/counselor, employment supervisor, or a community leader with whom the student interacts.
- The letter should provide key details about the interactions between the recommender and the applicant, and should highlight the applicant’s personality, work habits, and skills.
