Who Can Apply:
- The Dr. Joseph A. Towles African Study Abroad Scholarship will provide financial assistance for students at UNCF institutions to learn at an established university within the continent of Africa. Dr. Joseph A. Towles was a respected black social anthropologist and specialist in the study of African cultures. Dr. Towles, a native of Virginia, earned his doctorate at the Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.
- The Dr. Joseph A. Towles African Study Abroad Scholarship will allow students to receive an incredible academic experience and exposure to the rich traditions within African cultures. The applicants will be eligible for consideration if they are currently enrolled in a study abroad institution during the Spring 2024 Semester. The scholarships will be sent to the selected recipients’ UNCF institution, which will forward the funds to the study abroad university or institution within the 2023-24 academic year. The Dr. Joseph A. Towles African Study Abroad Scholarship will be available only to candidates that have been approved to participate in an accredited study abroad program by their current UNCF member institution.
Submission: The candidates will complete the content sections of the application. In addition, the applicants will submit two essays, current transcript, resume, study abroad program details, one academic and one general reference letters. The academic reference should confirm the institution’s approval for the candidate’s study-abroad semester. The designated country within the continent of Africa must also be approved for safety and travel as well.
