Who Can Apply:
- Deborah Brown Alexander was an amazing person and teacher. Debbie taught 5th grade in the Alief ISD. She passed away in 1981 after a brave fight with leukemia.
- Debbie’s approach to teaching was to be fun, creative, and engaging in the classroom. One example of this was Debbie’s use of the book, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, (by author Richard Bach), which taught her students to believe in themselves, to “spread their wings and fly”, and to be Adventurers!
- Debbie’s students and fellow educators came together and requested that the AISD Board of Trustees dedicate a new elementary school to honor Debbie as an inspirational teacher and person. They were successful and Deborah Brown Alexander Elementary opened in 1984. Debbie’s positive spirit and love for learning have been carried forward by all Alexander students and faculty, as Alexander Adventurers!
- This scholarship seeks to honor the memory of Deborah Brown Alexander by supporting deserving students who have an “Adventurer spirit” and a love for teaching. Any high school student at an Alief ISD School in Texas (Alief Elsik High School, Alief Hastings High School, Alief Taylor High School, Alief Early College High School, or Alief Kerr High School) may apply for this scholarship opportunity if they are pursuing a degree in Education. Additional consideration will be given to applicants that attended Deborah Brown Alexander Elementary School.
