Who Can Apply:
*Possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
*Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (“FAFSA”) form.
*Have a demonstrated, unmet financial need as verified by their college or university.
*Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
*For the undergraduate scholarship, be a college sophomore at the time of application, who will be a full-time enrolled junior at the time of the award, attending any accredited, four-year HBCU.
*For the graduate scholarship, be an entering first-year graduate student who is an HBCU senior or graduate at the time of application. Graduate recipients must be admitted to or full-time enrolled at any accredited, U.S. based college or university at the graduate level.
*Recipients must have a major in one of the following disciplines: English and other languages, English or other literature, writing, journalism, linguistics, rhetoric, scriptwriting, screenwriting, science writing, marketing, advertising, mass communications, media communications, web or social media writing and communications, copywriting, public relations, or entrepreneurship.
Submission:
Complete an online application using the UNCF website.
Undergraduate and graduate applicants must demonstrate enrollment in a degree leading to:
*Employment in the publishing or communications industry, or
* A career that could lead to their becoming a member of the EFA, including (but not limited to) editor, writer, copyeditor, proofreader, indexer, copywriter, researcher, graphic artist or designer, translator, website designer, journalist, and literary agent.
To demonstrate progress on that path, students shall submit an online application for the Program, complete with:
*A “resume” that includes extracurricular activities.
*A current official or unofficial transcript.
*An essay of no more than 500 words discussing: “What are your professional goals and what will receiving this scholarship mean to your ability to pursue your career?” Students should discuss in their writing any extracurricular involvements, work, and interests that support their professional goals.
A letter of recommendation is suggested, but not required. Applicants who submit a letter of recommendation will receive additional credit in the review process. All applicants will be notified that recipients’ contact information will be shared with the EFA.
