- Karen was a middle school orchestra teacher who cared for her elderly mother in her spare time. She was an accomplished educator, mother, wife, and friend who believed strongly in community service and caring for the needs of children of all ages and backgrounds.
- This scholarship seeks to honor the life and memory of Karen Von Bernewitz by supporting students who share her love for music and service.
- Any high school junior or senior who is a resident of Virginia, Maryland, or Washington, D.C. may apply for this scholarship opportunity if they will pursue a two or four-year educational program in music or in the service industry (public or civil service, education, social work, medicine, fire, rescue, EMS, etc.).
