Hello scholarship seekers! Happy Summer Vacation! I think nearly all schools — high schools and colleges — have finally finished up their academic year.
How did your finals go? Hopefully you have found a lucrative and meaningful way to spend your summer break, with a little R&R thrown in, too! Just don’t forget to leave time to work on some scholarship applications. Just because you are on summer break doesn’t mean the scholarship committees are.
As you know, every week I aim to make your scholarship search a little easier by spotlighting three great scholarships with upcoming deadlines. This week, I’ve got the $15,000 Ronzoni Smart Taste Challenge, a $1000 essay competition from Abbott & Fenner and a gamut of $500 scholarships from the Star Trek fan club (yes, I’m serious!).
1. Ronzoni Smart Taste Challenge: $15,000
Here’s a fun little scholarship. Log on to the Smart Taste Challenge to get all the details, but here’s the Cliff Notes version: Write a written review, write a written review with a photo or create a video review about whether or not your family could notice the calcium, vitamin D and fiber in Ronzoni’s new Smart Taste pasta. Your work won’t be judged like in a typical scholarship contest; rather it will earn you an entry into a sweepstakes with the grand prize of $15,000. A written essay will earn you one entry, a photo essay gets you three entries and a video review gets you five entries! Submit enough reviews to earn up to 35 entries. In addition to the $15,000 scholarship, there are 5 first place prizes of a laptop computer and 100 second place prizes of a $100 gift card. To enter the sweepstakes, you must be 18 years of age or older and a legal resident of the United States. Employees of Ronzoni are not eligible to apply. The submission deadline is May 31, 2010 at 11:59 pm EST.
2. Abbot & Fenner Scholarship: $1,000
I came across this scholarship on a university financial aid website, so I’m guessing it must be legit. But the website is a bit unpolished, so do your due diligence before you go hog-wild with your application. In any case, the scholarship is open to high school juniors and seniors who are planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution. To apply, you must submit an essay of 500 -1 1000 words answering the following question:
What do you see as the long term impact of our current recession on the average family? How might it affect their future decisions?
Essays must be submitted online at scholarships@abbottandfenner.com. The application deadline is June 19, 2010.
3.Starfleet Academy Scholarship: $500
The Starfleet International Star Trek Fan Association (no joke!) annually sponsors more than one dozen $500 college scholarships. Awards are open to any active Starfleet member currently attending a community college, four-year college, or most technical, junior or graduate school. The scholarships include:
- DeForest Kelley/Dr. Leonard McCoy Medical Scholarship for a wide range of medical studies
- James Doohan/Montgomery Scott Engineering Scholarship for engineering
- Patrick Stewart Scholarship for the Performing Arts
- George Takei International Studies Scholarship for the study of foreign languages or studies abroad.
- Armin Shimmerman Scholarship for business and management studies.
- Marina Sirtis Veterinary Science Scholarship for veterinary medicine and related fields.
- LeVar Burton Educational Scholarship for teachers
- Gene Roddenberry Memorial Scholarship for aspiring writers
- Space Explorers’ Memorial Scholarship for all courses of study
