- Samuel D. Hartley served in the US Air Force from 1959 to 1963, where he played a crucial role in developing the film and prints of the missile sites during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Afterward, he pursued his education at York College and held several employment positions throughout his career. Sam was a sales representative and district manager for Equitable Life Assurance Society for 12 years, a manufacturing representative for Garland Roofing Co. of Cleveland, Ohio, for 15 years, and worked for the PA Dept. of Revenue for five years.
- Aside from his professional accomplishments, Sam was an active member of his community. He was a former member of the Gettysburg Elks Club and a current member of the American Legion. Sam was an avid golfer and had been an active participant in the Gettysburg Country Club for more than five decades. As a child, he had the opportunity to caddie for President Eisenhower on several occasions. Sam was recognized for his contributions to the sport in 2019 when he was elected to the Adams County Sports Hall of Fame for golf.
