Who Can Apply: Debbie Schuler was a member of the IES Abroad Durham Class of 1973-74. She graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia and later earned an MBA in Finance and Multinational Enterprise at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.
Debbie says, “The experience in Durham was even more than I dreamed. I grew up, grew confident, grew more open-minded, and became a better US and global citizen.”
Debbie’s career began in international banking with Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company of Chicago, and led to a transfer to Singapore. When Continental Bank was acquired by Bank of America in 1984, it was her experience in international credit derivatives that earned her a position in BofA’s London-based Credit Risk Evaluation Team. Later, a job rating international financial institutions and sovereigns with Moody’s Investors Service, took her to Asia, South America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
“I have had the opportunity to live and work in many of the world’s major financial centers managing teams around the world. I have found working in emerging markets to both exotic and the most rewarding because even a small loan or a single credit rating can have a surprisingly large impact on people’s lives.”
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide assistance for students with financial need participating in any IES Abroad program outside of North America. Debbie established this scholarship to demonstrate and pay forward the valuable impact of study abroad.
