2024 Aurelio Javellana Montinola Jr. Family Scholarship Fund (Deadline: May 1, 2024)

June 30, 2023 By The FinancialAidFinder Scholarship Team

Who Can Apply:

  • The Aurelio Javellana Montinola Jr. Family Scholarship Fund was created in honor and memory of Aurelio Javellana Montinola Jr (1925 -1996), with the purpose of enabling and facilitating study abroad, and making international travel and education accessible to students with financial need. The intent of the Montinola scholarship is to provide annual support to two college students enrolled at a U.S. college or university to attend any IES Abroad standard semester or academic year program.
  • The Montinola family members have, throughout their lifetimes, been fervent supporters and promoters of higher education, professional training in a variety academic venues within the Philippines and abroad, as well as patrons of the arts.
  • Aurelio Javellana Montinola Jr, (1925-1996) was born in Iloilo province, and educated at the Ateneo de Manila, Fordham University, and the Harvard Business School. Following his father, Aurelio Sr., who was the former Secretary of Finance for the Philippines, Aurelio Jr. also headed Amon Trading Corporation and Republic Cement Corporation. He was appointed Dean of the Ateneo Graduate School of Business, and helped found the Asian Institute of Management. Among others, he was President of the Management Association of the Philippines, and the Harvard Business School Association of the Philippines, while assisting as Trustee of the Manila Symphony Orchestra, Philippine Ballet Theater, Metropolitan Museum of Manila Foundation, and Ophthalmological Foundation of the Philippines. An avid sportsman and passionate lover of the arts, he encouraged training and cultural exposure abroad, and assisted outstanding Philippine artists such as Vicente Manasala (cubist painter and illustrator), Raul Sunico (pianist) and Emmanuel Cordova (painter). A bon vivant, he loved France and spent several happy summers learning French in the south of France. He lived a full and happy life, and inspired the lives of countless others to excel in their fields.
  • Lourdes Reyes Montinola (born 1927) graduated from Marymount College New York, received a Masters from Harvard, and a PhD from the University of the Philippines. She is an educator by profession, serving as Corporate Secretary, and then as Chairman and CEO of Far Eastern University (FEU), a school her father, Dr. Nicanor Reyes, founded in 1928. She now serves as Chairman Emeritus.
  • Three of four children attended IES Abroad programs – Aurelio (Gigi) in Paris summer ‘70 and spring ‘71, and Nantes fall ‘70, Antonio in Vienna ’73-’74 and Gianna in Paris ’78-’79, at the behest of their father, who heard about the opportunity from a colleague and enrolled them. International study abroad opened up their eyes to the world, allowed them to pick up language skills, and taught them to interact effectively with other cultures.
  • Today, the siblings carry this forward to the next generation. After successful careers of their own, the Montinolas now play key roles at the FEU, which has 11 campuses and a student population in the 35,000 range. Gigi serves as Chairman and CEO; Johnny is CFO; Gianna is Vice President for Corporate Affairs; and Anton handles Sports and Real Estate.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Enroll in a semester or full year IES Abroad program.
  • Have an expected family contribution (EFC) of $30,000 or less.
