2024 William & Fannie Steinberg Endowed Scholarship (Deadline: May 1, 2024)

July 1, 2023 By The FinancialAidFinder Scholarship Team

Who Can Apply:

  • The William and Fannie Steinberg Endowed Scholarship was generously funded by Dr. Michael S. Steinberg, Executive Vice President for Academic Programs and a long-term employee of IES Abroad, and his wife, Dr. Salme Harju Steinberg, President Emerita of Northeastern Illinois University, to honor Michael’s parents, William and Fannie Steinberg.
  • William Steinberg graduated from the University of Alabama, Brooklyn Law School, and the Yeshiva Graduate School of Social Work. He worked in charitable organizations through most of his career as a manager and fundraiser. Outside of work, he was an active volunteer who served as the Vice President of the city-wide Parents Association of the New York City schools, as President of the adult education Center of Taft High School in the Bronx, and as a leader of the reform wing of the Democratic Party in the Bronx. He died at the age of 52. Fannie Steinberg was a graduate of Hunter College, Columbia University Teachers College, and the Adelphi School of Social Work. As a social worker, she worked for private agencies and then as Director of the Social Work Department for the New York Housing Authority. In her retirement, she served for more than 20 years as President of the Hudson Guild Senior Center and was active in senior citizen affairs in Manhattan. Both William and Fannie Steinberg were committed and vocal supporters of the peace movement, civil rights, and civil liberties throughout their lives. They also both had a strong interest in international issues and traveled abroad extensively in their youth.
  • Drs. Michael and Salme Steinberg established this scholarship to honor Michael’s parents and their civic engagement and to help to make study abroad possible for students who value the causes in which they believe, providing scholarship aid to those who have demonstrated their commitment to peace, human rights, civil liberties, social betterment or environmental protection through volunteer activities, publications, and/or academic interests and career plans.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Enroll in a semester or full year IES Abroad program.
  • Attend a U.S. college or university.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and involvement in activities related to peace, human rights, civil liberties, social betterment, or environmental protection.
  • Have an expected family contribution (EFC) of $30,000 or less.
