Who Can Apply:
- In an era when the natural world faces growing threats, protecting wildlife, preserving ecosystems, and conserving our shared environment have never been a more worthy investment.
- The Irving S. Berman Stewardship Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Irving S. Berman—“Irv”—a beloved husband whose greatest joys were found outdoors surrounded by nature in all its forms: He believed deeply in protecting the environment. As a child, Irv embodied resilience and determination. From the age of five he rose before dawn to deliver newspapers, yet still excelled academically, earning outstanding grades while staying extraordinarily active in school. He played sports, enrolled in challenging extracurricular courses, and was elected chairman of the student council. Irv’s life demonstrated that hard work, curiosity, and a love of the world around us can coexist—no matter the obstacles. This scholarship carries forward Irv’s legacy by supporting the next generation of environmental leaders who share his work ethic, intellectual drive, and profound appreciation for the natural world.
- This scholarship is meant for resilient, high-achieving students who mirror Irv’s spirit—individuals who have overcome financial hardship in a single-mother household yet remain passionately committed to learning, leadership, and safeguarding the earth.
- Any high school, undergraduate, or graduate student from a low-income, single-parent household may apply for this scholarship opportunity if they’re pursuing environmental science, conservation biology, ecology, zoology or closely related field. Special consideration will be given to students from a Jewish background, whether cultural, ethical, or spiritual.
Submission: This scholarship celebrates inspired students who, like Irv Berman, wake up every day determined to work hard, learn deeply, lead courageously, and protect the natural world they love. If that sounds like you, we warmly invite you to apply and share your story in 400-600 words.
