Scholarship Announcements: IT students, Junior Fire Fighters and Prom Go-ers

May 15, 2012 By mara

Happy Friday. How many scholarships have you applied for this week? Why not take an hour or two right now to do some scholarship research and write up some applications. Every Friday, I make that task a little bit easier for you by posting about three scholarships with upcoming deadlines.

This week, I have great opportunities for Information Technology majors, junior fire fighters and wacky high school students willing to wear duct tape to prom. If you are looking for free money to help you pay for college, then you might enjoy one of our archived articles about completing scholarship applications, writing scholarship essays, and finding more opportunities through free scholarship search engines.

1. The Betty Stevens-Frecknall Scholarship
Are you an IT major? Then here is a great scholarship opportunity for you. The Foundation for Information Technology Education is dedicated to the professional development of individuals in the Information Systems industry. One of the ways in which they do this is through the Betty Stevens-Frecknall Scholarship. This national scholarship supports university students pursuing an accredited degree program related to information technology. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled full-time in a terminal degree program. Winners will be selected on the basis of scholastic ability, leadership potential and financial need. The application deadline is May 31.

2. Junior Firefighter Scholarship: $5,000
Baskin-Robbins and the Dunkin’ Brands Community Foundation annually provide $50,000 in scholarships to ten outstanding junior firefighters seeking to attend university. The competitive application process identifies junior firefighters who have demonstrated commitment and dedication to their local fire service. Scholarships can be use for two- or four-year institutions, a trade school or a certification program. Eligible applicants must be seniors in high school or have graduated from high school within the past three years. The application deadline is Friday, June 1.

3. Stuck at Prom, Duck Tape Brand Duct Tape Scholarship Contest: $3,000
Oh how I love this scholarship! It definitely doesn’t getting any weirder than this one. If you are a fashion-forward high school student who doesn’t mind getting yourself into a, er, sticky situation, then you have a good chance at winning $3,000 for college. Here’s the deal: Go to your high school prom dressed in duck tape. Yup, duck tape. Take a picture of you and your duck-taped date and send it into the Duck Brand Duct Tape Stuck at Prom Contest. The competition is open to U.S. citizens ages 14 and older. Winners are picked for their “originality, workmanship and quantity of tape”. That quantity thing is a major piece of the puzzle — don’t just accessorize with the tape. Past winners went for a total duck tape ensemble, so if you’re serious about this fashion challenge, it’s best to go all out. The application deadline is typically in June.

Good luck with your applications.
