Who Can Apply: With preference to rising seniors studying classical, medieval and/or early modern literature and/or writing on at least one, though not necessarily all, of the following topics: disability studies, ecocriticism and animal rights, the Francesca A. Marx Scholarship was established in 2017 to provide scholarship support to full-time UCLA undergraduates.
Preference also goes to students engaged in writing a thesis closely related to one or more of those topics, or to students having completed one. The scholarship honors the memory of Francesca Marx, a UCLA Ph.D. in English and the first Assistant Director of the UCLA Center for Scholarships and Scholar Enrichment (formerly the Scholarship Resource Center).
Submission:
- Please upload a sample of your writing (no more than five pages) related to one or more of the following topics: on classical, medieval and/or early modern literature, disability studies, ecocriticism and/or animal rights.
- Please upload a current resume that focuses on your experiences and activities in one or more of the following areas: classical, medieval and/or early modern literature, disability studies, ecocriticism/environmentalism and/or animal rights.
- Please write a 100-150 word bio that focuses on your interest in one or more of the following areas — classical, medieval and/or early modern literature. disability studies, ecocriticism/environmentalism and/or animal rights — and includes a brief statement of current career goals.
- LETTER OF REFERENCE: Please provide the name and email of someone (not a peer or family member) who will provide a letter of reference on your behalf that speaks to your experience, aptitude and achievements in studying classical, medieval and/or early modern literature, disability studies, ecocriticism and/or animal rights. Be sure to obtain permission from your recommender before submitting their name and email address. Your recommender will automatically receive a link prompting them to upload the recommendation via the UCLA Scholarship Portal.
