Scholarship Name: Barbara Wiedner and Dorothy Vandercook Memorial Peace Scholarship
Description: Grandmothers for Peace is an organization whose name pretty much speaks for itself. The foundation distributes a number of small scholarships to high school seniors and college freshmen on the basis of their commitment to peace and social justice, particularly in awareness of nuclear issues. The foundation seeks students who participate in community service as it relates to making the world a more peaceful place for future generations. Awards are not given based on academic merit.

Earth Island Institutes New Leaders Initiative
Scholarship Name: Brower Youth Awards
Description: Young activists and environmental leaders should take note of the Brower Youth Awards, administered by the Earth Island Institute. The award is named for David Brower, a famous mountain climber and the founder of the Earth Island Institute. Brower was committed to preserving the worlds natural spaces, and the award recognizes students carrying out similar work. Eligible candidates should be between the ages of 13 and 22, and have lead a particular project or initiative directly related to environmental conservation, protection and restoration. In addition to the $3,000 cash prize, award recipients receive a trip to California to participate in the Earth Island Institutes award ceremony.
