Scholarship Name: High School Public Speaking Contest
Description: If you are a native Californian who knows a lot about your state’s history (and loves to talk about it) the Ramona Museum of California History High School Public Speaking Contest is for you. High school students who have not yet turned 20 are asked to prepare 5-7 minute speeches (with no visual aids or props) on topics relating to California history (topics include Richard Nixon, oil discovery and the founding of Los Angeles). Students must make it through a preliminary round to become eligible for the $500 grand prize.
Award: $50 – $500
Awards per Year: 20

How to Apply/Contact: Applications must be mailed or faxed to the Ramona Museum to be considered for the contest. Complete rules and a list of appropriate topics are available at the Ramona Museum website.

National Park Service

Scholarship Name: Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest
Description: Every two years, the National Park Service holds a public speaking contest focusing on the life and presidency of Theodore Roosevelt, and awards the winner of the contest a cash prize which he or she can use for college! The contest, which takes place in Western New York, consists of a 5-7 minute original speech relating to Theodore Roosevelt. Speeches are judges on their originality, accuracy and presentation. The contest in sponsored by the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site in Buffalo, NY. Students are provided with all of the resource materials that they might need to prepare and perform their speeches.
