Scholarship Name: Maryknoll Essay Contest
Description:It may seem like there isn’t a whole lot of space in the world of college and scholarships essays to talk about your religious beliefs, or your relationship with a higher power. The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers offer an essay contest to talk about just that. Each year, they host an essay contest for both middle and high school students which requires an essay about a topic relating to the applicant’s relationship with Jesus Christ. The catholic organization offers $1,000 to the top essay in each of the divisions (Division I is grades 6-8, Division II is grades 9-12), and also has second and third place prizes of $500 and $300 respectively. That’s pretty good for an essay that only needs to be 500-750 words!

How to Apply/Contact: You can find out more about the Maryknoll Essay Contest by visiting the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers website, where they will post the essay topic for the current year. Division II (high school) scholarship applicants may submit their essay using the online form, but middle school students must send essays via postal mail to address provided.

Scholarship Name: Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Award
Description: Entrepreneurship is more than just a buzz word; having entrepreneurial tendencies can be a great way to get some extra money to pay for college. Possessing the qualities of an entrepreneur means combining business savvy with a certain amount on ingenuity and risk. At least that’s the way the Guardian Life Insurance sees it, with their Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Award. The award, which is worth $1,000 in scholarship money, recognizes young women who have displayed the qualities of a young entrepreneur, and who have an adult to recommend them to the scholarship committee. Applicants must write a short essay about what entrepreneurship and community service means to them, and submit a letter of recommendation from someone who has worked with them in an entrepreneurial capacity. Young women must be between the ages of 12-18 to qualify.
