Scholarship Name: McGowan Foundation Scholarship
Description: The Commission on Economic Opportunity began in the 1960s in Pennsylvania as an organization looking to lessen some to the effects that poverty was having on its citizens and communities, particularly hunger and homelessness. Today, the Commission organizes a number of programs, including Kid’s Cafe, which involves young people in the work of the CEO through community service. The Kid’s Cafe is also responsible for administering the McGowan scholarship. The scholarship was founded by William McGowan, who sites his receipt of a scholarship as a pivotal moment is his academic and professional success. The McGowan Foundation Scholarship is awarded to students pursuing graduate studies who need financial assistance. Eligible candidates will have been active in community service, either with CEO or elsewhere.

Build-a-Bear Workshop
Scholarship Name: Huggable Heroes Contest
Description: If you live anywhere near the mall, have shopped at a mall, or even just been inside of a mall, you’ve probably seen the Build-a-Bear Workshop. This teddy bear-building store invites patrons to customize stuffed animals to meet their needs and interests. What you probably don’t know about Build-a-Bear is that it places a high value on community service by it’s customers young and old. Students young as 8 years old can be nominated for Build-a-Bear’s “Huggable Heroes” program, which rewards young philanthropists and community advocates with $7,500 for college, and $2,500 for the charity/cause of their choice. Past recipients include non-profit founder, highly active volunteers and large-scale fundraisers. Build-a-bear is truly looking for young community heroes who have demonstrated commitment to their cause.
Award: $7,500 (plus $2,500 donation to charity of your choice)
