Scholarship Name: USA Rice Federation Scholarship
Description: In honor of September being National Rice Month, the USA Rice Federation is sponsoring a scholarship contest for high school juniors and seniors from the rice-growing states of Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Texas. To enter, you must conduct some activity during the month of September to promote U.S.-grown rice (did you know that 85 percent of the rice consumed in the United States is grown here?) Some suggested themes include:
- Nutritional benefits of U.S.-grown rice
- Culinary versatility of U.S.-grown rice
- Economic importance of U.S. rice production and processing
- Conservation and environmental benefits of the U.S. rice industry
Next, you must write up a compelling description of your initiative. A panel of judges will pick the winners based on creativity and impact. The grand prize winner will earn a $4,000 scholarship, plus an all-expense paid trip to the USA Rice Outlook Conference in New Orleans, LA in December.

Institute of Food Technologists (IFT)
Scholarship Name: IFT General Scholarships for Freshman and Sophomores
Description: If you are interested in food science, can picture yourself manufacturing Fritos, designing the next Wheaties box or perfecting the recipe for Wonder Bread, your first stop for college scholarships should be the Institute of Food Technologists. In addition to the general IFT undergraduate scholarships fo $1,000, the Institute lists all kinds of scholarships available to both undergraduate and graduate students who are looking to enter the food science industry. To qualify for a general scholarship for freshman and sophomores, students must be pursuing a degree in food science or food technology at an institution that is approved by the IFT (a complete list of these schools is available here). Because of the number of scholarships offered by IFT, both general and specialized, it is very important that you read through all of the eligibility information on the site before moving forward with application submission; there maybe up to three different scholarships on the site for which you are eligible!

How to Apply/Contact: The paper application process for IFT scholarships has two major steps: first, fill out the application, available on the IFT website. Once you have the application completed, and have gathered all supplemental information, you must submit the full packet to the head of your food science department for approval. The department heads will be responsible for submitting the applications, and will also be notified directly about scholarship winners.
