Scholarship Name: Ruben Salazar Scholarship Fund
Description: The National Association of Hispanic Journalists seeks to “increase the Latino presence in newsrooms.” As such, the Association offers scholarships to budding young journalist to help them achieve their dreams of reporting the news, and being at the center of current events.Ten scholarships are awarded each year through the Ruben Salazar Scholarship fund, which is named for pioneer Latino journalist Ruben Salazar, who was tragically killed in Los Angeles while covering a Chicano anti-Vietnam demonstration. Mr. Salazar showed real commitment to reporting the news, especially for historically under-represented Latinos. The $2,000 awards a given to students pursuing careers in either English or Spanish language journalism. The NAHJ also gives scholarship awards through partnerships with local corporations and foundations.

Jim Murray Foundation
Scholarship Name: Murray Scholars Program for Journalism
Description: If you are a student sportswriter, or even a journalism major who is interested in sports, make sure that your school is familiar with the Murray Scholars Program for Journalism. Established in memory of veteran sportswriter Jim Murray by his wife, the scholarship fund hosts a national essay contest for sophomores and juniors pursuing journalism degrees. While sports journalists may have the advantage (since the annual topic is typically sports-related), any student studying or planning to pursue a career in journalism is welcome to apply. Each applicant submits his/her essay to the journalism department chair at his/her university, and the top essay is submitted to the Jim Murray Foundation for final selection. The foundation has assembled a scholarship committee of sportswriter to make final decisions. Each of the 5 finalists chose will receive a $5,000 scholarship. Trinity College, Jim Murray’s alma mater, is guaranteed one of the five scholarships each year.
